Why we checked itSpecific allegation that Arizona's Secretary of State illegally connected election systems to the internet via an EMS gateway — a serious and verifiable claim about unlawful conduct
What we foundThe claim that Fontes 'without legal authorization' allowed election systems to connect to the internet via an EMS gateway is actively disputed: the Republican-controlled Arizona Legislature asserted this in SB 1037's findings, but the Governor vetoed the bill, the Secretary of State's office maintains all systems comply with existing law, and prior Arizona law (SB 1642) actually established a regulated framework permitting limited EMS gateway internet use.
